Art School Confidential

Earth and Moon cartoon

Floating eyeball illustration

Penscape

Moonlight Dinner

I attended art school during the early 70's, where I took a variety of classes with names like Design, Media, Illustration, and Photography. Media was all about tools and techniques. The class was introduced to different types of pens and brushes; inks and wash; and many different types of papers. This moon cartoon was done with a crow quill pen and a brush. I think it was an exercise in using varying line weights.

Eye Ball

The eyeball illustration was done for another art school assignment. As I recall the subject matter was open, but the assignment was to use the shadow to create the illusion of an object that was above the ground. Although it was never published, it seems like the kind of thing that could have run in Space and Time magazine.

Penscape

After art school I did some freelance design, illustration, and production work off and on for several years. This illustration of drawing implements was done for a business card. It was drawn with a rapidiograph and includes technical pens, brushes, markers, knifes, pencils, and a few made up tools to fill in the gaps.
