Three #2

Three #2 edited by Robert Kirby

Spring 2010, Cubside Comics. Front cover by Michael Fahy. Back cover and the technical stuff by Craig Bostick. 32 color pages, plus cover. 7" x 8.5" saddle stitch binding, trimmed. Printed in Canada. $6.25 from Rob Kirby Comics

Panels from Three #2

Eric Orner's Weekends Abroad from the first issue of Three was selected for the 2011 Best American Comics anthology. Three #2 opens with Dragon (9 pages) illustrated by Jon Macy, the artist responsible for Teleny and Fearful Hunter. It's an autobiographical tale of sex and sort-of romance written by Brit cartoonist-and-zinester-turned-academic Sina Shamsavari aka Sina Evil.

Panels from Three #2

Help Wanted (5 pages) where veteran alterna-queer cartoonist Jen Camper and fan-favorite Michael Fahy alternate panels in a romance comic with a difference.

Panel from Three#2

Nothin' But Trouble (18 pages) features a team up of Boy Trouble favorites David (Steven’s Comics) Kelly and Craig Bostick for a tale set in the early 1960s, about a country singer and a gay hustler. And Kirby already has the line-up for Three #3 all planned out:

Story by Steve Keeter, with artwork by Tony Lorenz and Jeff Austin. It's a premise of sorts for an upcoming team story, The Vindicators, which Main plans to feature in a future issue of this anthology.

Monster Party

Monster Party by Chris Eliopoulos

2011 Koyama Press
24 b&w pages, plus color cover
7" x 10", saddle stitched, trimmed
$5 (plus postage) from Elio House

Everything about Chris Eliopoulos' new comic book Monster Party is top notch. Elio draws his unique characters in wacky proportions, but they're so animated they immediately come to life on the page and suck you into their world. Tapping into the vivid imagination of a child the age of the main character Oscar, Elio imagines a basement harboring a horde of reptilian/amphibious monsters, with a touch of plush. They're cute, but highly unpredictable. Elio packs plenty of action and entertainment into this issue-length, all-ages adventure.

Printed in China, the quality interior paper, the silky smooth cover stock and what must be offset printing enrich the Monster Party package well beyond most small press productions. Pure cartoon eye candy. It's a Midnight Fiction Favorite.
